With just two single barrels allocated to this release, the Plank Walker was Broken Barrel’s 2021 annual holiday release. With a 7-Year age statement, these single barrels each put out approximately 210 magnificent and limited bottles of whiskey.
The Plank Walker offers high octane and robust flavors of toasted honey, vanilla bean, molasses all finishing with baking spices and baked pie crust. It’s a whiskey that truly evolved with each sip. Having used rum barrels with each release of the Reserve Oak Series, with the Plank Walker, Broken Barrel felt like showcasing the culmination of past experiences by offering the best possible version of a Rum cask finish. With Bourbon, there were lots of competing flavors at play given the new charred white oak barrel requirements. However with this [MGP] American whiskey, a unique mash bill of 85% Corn & 15% Rye, was a whiskey that never rested in new charred oak. Instead, it spent seven years maturing in used bourbon barrels, yielding a more impressionable, thick, viscous whiskey. The resulting whiskey was able to absorb much more rum characteristics and flavor than any bourbon previously finished with Rum; the goal of the project from the very outset.
